TCJS continues its Young Artists Series with an ensemble from the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire on October 4th at the Artists Quarter. Led by drummer Mike Malone, Malonious Thunk includes trumpeter Jake Kobberdahl, saxophonist Nick Pierce, pianist Cody Peterson, and bassist Cody Christian. Malone and Peterson performed on this series in fall 2011 with the quartet, Coriolis Effect.
Mike Malone is a senior, drummer for Jazz I, and Student Director of Jazz IV at UW-EC. With Jazz I, he has worked and performed with John Patitucci, Geoffrey Keezer, Andy Martin, Eric Marienthal, Brian Grivna, Connie Evingson, Bobby Sanabria, Alan Baylock, Michael Phillip Mossman, and Branford Marsalis. He has also studied with Jeff Crowell, Babatunde Lea, Ryan Korb, Matt Edlund, and Adrian Suarez. In addition to his duties with Jazz IV, Mike teaches at local high schools and at Morgan Music. His performing schedule includes work with Josh Gallagher, Sue Orfield, Jeremy Boettcher, Christine Hitt and more. Mike also leads the Mike Malone Big Band, which holds monthly swing dances at Higherground. With Gallagher he runs the biweekly Acoustic Café Jazz Series, which features top Chippewa Valley musicians. Malonious Thunk is Mike’s first group to feature his original compositions and arrangements. This fall, the ensemble is presenting a series of show highlighting great quintet albums of the past, including arrangements of Cannonball Adderly's Something Else album, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messenger's Moanin album, Lee Morgan's Sidewinder album, and Clifford Brown's Study In Brown album. The band will also feature Mike’s compositions, arranged specifically for Malonious Thunk. “I am fortunate to act as a leader with this group, says Mike, “But I am lucky to be a part of many student groups, due to the strong student community at UW-Eau Claire.”
